Winning is Life. You'd Better Bring Your A-Game.
In a game of checkers, would you show your opponent mercy? What about if that opponent happened to be your grandmother? No? Neither would we. Why? Because like you, we're competitive. And the one thing we've found consistent among some of the best sports fans in America is that they too are competitive. Fiercely. Blood, sweat, tattoos, body modification, absenteeism at family events—you name it. The only thing sacred is the team.
As we head into College Football's Bowl Season, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the kings of fandom among us—those true superfans who show no mercy, who truly stand out, and whose zeal for their team cannot go unnoticed. We thought we'd start with the fans representing our main playoff contenders. (Though we won't rest until we've uncovered and shared each and every one of you hardcore fans). So strap on your helmet, fire up the grill, and lets dance.
OKLAHOMA SOONERS
Caitlyn Epes / The Daily
David Bartell is the epitome of dad-bod beauty. The old school, cool confidence is what we love so much about him. He doesn't need bells or whistles, he just IS. Whether you are intimidated by his presence or not, you can feel his Sooners energy like a stiff-arm to the face. They say it's better to be feared than loved, but in David's case, we think it's a little of both.
GEORGIA BULLDOGS
Curtis Compton/AJC
Mike 'Big Dawg' Woods (may he rest in peace) needed no introduction at Sanford Stadium. A 45 year-strong ticket holder, Mike learned from his father how a true superfan shows his pride. He was a Hungry Fan through and through and was known to throw one of the best tailgates in NCAA sports. For this, Mike was featured on Andrew Zimmerman's Appetite for Life, showcasing his epic pre-game tailgates. He even had a signature tailgating cocktail (aptly) named the Florida Coca-Cola. Fashion-wise, Big Dawg's signature apparel consisted of a bulldog painted on his head by his wife Dianne and a pair of black overalls bespeckled with sayings from Georgia legends as well as patches from local police precincts. A true specimen. He passed away in January of 2017 but his legend will forever live on.
NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
ABC 57, South Bend, IN
Notre Dame senior Brandon Hardy has taken one of the largest fan bases in sports by storm. Clad in gold suits, hoodies, and other gold-leaf-laden fashion, Hardy looks as good (if not better) and shinier than his team's helmets. He's a certified public figure on Instagram, which means he has a legitimate shot in 2020. Brandon is known on campus as the Gold Jacket Guy, which is a lot better than other nicknames we probably had in college. He's a venerable lighthouse in the student section, so the next time you are watching the Irish play, you'll know who that flash of gold is when the camera pans the stands.
(We tried to work in a gold at the end of the rainbow joke here. Not so much. If you think of one, tweet us @TheHungryFan).
CLEMSON TIGERS
WFSA, Montgomery, AL
Clemson superfan Mary Ann Kirby of Simpsonville, South Carolina might not be wearing shoulder pads, or chest paint at the next Tigers game, but don't think of her as anything less than a HUGE fan of Clemson football. She is indeed such a fan that she had one of her teeth permanently replaced with one covered in Clemson tiger paw. Okay, so she had to get a tooth replacement anyway but the replacement tooth didn't originally come Tiger paw-clad. Believe it or not, this superfan wasn't born a devout Clemson supporter. She credits her husband for converting her. We can smell true love and canned beer in the air tonight.
ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE
A simple photo just would not do. Nay, we needed a slideshow to showcase this masterpiece of fandom. His name is Nathan Davis. His team is Alabama. His status in the Hungry Fan® Superfan Hall of Fame is #1. Nathan's body is legit COVERED in Alabama tattoos. The pièce de ré·sis·tance most definitely has to be the mammoth back piece which intricately depicts the mighty Bear Bryant in all his deserving glory. A thank you shout out goes to @jesuspoet photography for the beautiful up close and personal images. Rammer jammer yellow hammer.
