On a visit to Unity Farms in Riverside, California, we got ourselves an extra large and juicy watermelon. We ate a ton of it, but there was simply soooo much. So what do you do with excess watermelon that you don’t want to go bad? Make a delicious cocktail!
Since watermelon is completely a seasonal fruit, it’s best enjoyed as a frosty drink in the summer. You can keep it a virgin for kids and those not imbibing, or add in some vodka to make it a tasty summer-ade for the grown folks.
Ingredients
6 oz Watermelon, cut into blender-friendly pieces
Splash of water
1 oz Fresh lemon juice
Several sprigs of lemon basil, to taste
1 ounce citrus-flavored vodka (optional)
Directions
Combine the ingredients, except vodka, in a blender on smoothie setting, and blend until it’s not pulpy or clumpy*.
Pour into a pitcher and let cool in the fridge.
Optional: If you want to turn this tasty fruit drink into a yummy adult beverage, add 1 ounce of citrus-flavored vodka to a shaker with the blended mix and serve. Otherwise, serve chilled as is*.
Recipe Note
Pro Tip 1:
If you prefer your cooler very smooth, we suggest straining the blended mixture before going on to Step 2.
Pro Tip 2:
You can also put some of the blended (virgin) mixture into a martini shaker with ice, shake, strain, and serve.
