Nothing says the holidays like hot mulled drinks, especially cider. It feels so nice going down, and this recipe offers a perfect blend of sweet apple with a hint of citrus and spices that’ll warm you from the inside out.
A note about warming the cider: Most glass bottles you can buy online come with a swing top, which is made of metal. Because this bottled cocktail is intended to be served warm or hot, it’ll require warming if it’s not served immediately after you’ve made it. Important: Remember not to put the swing top bottle in the microwave. Your best bet for warming this is to pour the cocktail into a ceramic bowl or other microwave-safe bowl and microwave it. Or you can double boil it. See an example of how to double boil here. Once the cider is warmed, return it to the bottle. Note: Let the mixture cool for a bit before adding it to the glass, as it could break or crack the glass if it’s too hot. Pour, and enjoy!
Ingredients
2 ½ cups apple cider
½ orange, rind peeled off into pieces
4 whole cloves
1–2 whole cinnamon sticks
4 allspice berries
2 pods cardamom
1 ½ cups spiced rum
Directions
Pour the apple cider into a small saucepan. Add in the orange, the peel pieces, and the spices (all ingredients above save for the rum). Heat over medium-high for about 3 minutes, then cover, and lower heat to a simmer. Let simmer for 20 minutes.
Strain out the spices, saving the cinnamon sticks.
Add the cinnamon sticks into your glass bottle, along with the rum and heated apple cider. Serve hot, or if you prefer, warm.
